Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Book Review

I’m not someone who typically reads romance or contemporary fiction (or “fluffy fiction” as I like to call it 🙃), but I really enjoyed this one. Reading this book felt like watching a romcom. It’s light and sweet and served as the perfect escape from my COVID-related anxiety.⁣
⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣The story takes place in a sort of parallel universe - one where a woman from Texas (with bi-racial children) won the 2016 presidential election (if only!). The lead character, Alex Claremont-Diaz is the charismatic and charming first son of the United States. Alex and his arch-nemesis, Henry aka the handsome Prince of Wales, get into a tiff at the royal wedding and end up creating a PR nightmare. As a means to remedy both their reputations (and repair intentional relations), their teams devise a PR scheme of a platonic bromance between the two. Of course, after spending time together, they end up falling in love… but not without many stumbles and funny squabbles along the way.⁣
⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣I like the fact that this book takes a typical romantic comedy plot-line and gives it an LGBTQ spin. There are also many interesting and unique supporting characters that added depth to the storyline.⁣

⁣Another thing I enjoyed about this book were all the mentions of my hometown of Austin. Throughout the book, Alex often reminisces on his childhood in Austin and the Texas hill-country.⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣If you’re looking for a breezy and fun summer read, this is definitely one to pick up.⁣
