Recursion by Blake Crouch
Book Review
This mind-bending book was incredible, so naturally, I thought it deserved an equally sensational photo 😛.
I think this is the first true sci-fi book I’ve ever read… which is nuts, because I love a good sci-fi movie. I especially love stories that focus on the consequences of altering the space-time continuum. Recursion was easily a five star read for me and now I can’t wait to pick up Blake Crouch’s other book, Dark Matter.
This mind-bending novel begins in 2018 with NYPD cop Barry Sutton investigating a suicide - the victim of which was consumed by a mysterious illness called False Memory Syndrome. This strange affliction alters the brain’s memories and creates false memories of another life. The story alternates between Barry’s story in 2018 and Helena’s story in 2007. Helena is a neuroscientist working on a cure for dementia when she unintentionally creates a mechanism to travel back in time to a specific memory. As Barry searches for clues about the nature of False Memory Syndrome, his story intertwines with Helena’s and together, the two of them must find a way to prevent the past from undoing itself.
As the book questions the nature of our reality, it gave me major Inception vibes (but with an added time-travel component). At times, it almost felt like I was reading a script, as I could so clearly see the story playing out on the big screen. Fingers crossed it gets made into an epic movie or series!
