Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Book Review

mexicangothic

Of all the spooky books I’ve read this month, this one was definitely the strangest. I had many WTF moments while reading this one. 😳😳😳⁣

⁣The story takes place in a haunted mansion, called High Place, in 1950s Mexico. The lead character, Noemi is a young gorgeous socialite living in Mexico City. When Noemi’s father receives a concerning letter from her newly-married cousin, Catalina, Noemi is sent to High Place in the Mexican countryside to help her cousin. Upon her arrival at the gothic mansion, Noemi finds her cousin in a disoriented state muttering about ghosts and voices in the walls. It’s not long before Noemi begins having disturbing dreams and experiences of her own. As she searches for clues to explain Catalina’s condition, she beings to unravel the dark past of High Place and the family that inhabits it.

⁣I spent the majority of the book trying to figure out if this was a work of fantasy or if there was some realistic and explainable reason for the many strange and grotesque occurrences. Reading about the gloom in particular (if you know, you know), made me feel drunk 🥴.⁣

⁣This twisted story was a bit too out-there for my taste, however, the book is very well written and the author paints an incredibly beautiful picture of the gothic scenery. I have no doubt this will make for a visually rich and freaky movie or series… one that will certainly prove too terrifying for me to watch. ⁣

⁣⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars

Have you read this one?? If so, I’m so curious to know what you thought!
