Educated by Tara Westover
Book Review
Raised by Mormon survivalists in rural Idaho, Tara Westover didn’t step foot in a classroom until she was 17 years old. Instead of going to school, she and her six siblings spent their childhoods working in their father’s junkyard and preparing for doomsday.
Despite never receiving a formal education, Tara taught herself enough to take the ACT and gain acceptance to Bringham Young University. While at BYU, Tara leaned about the Holocaust and the civil rights movement for the first time. Through her studies of history and philosophy, she gained the knowledge necessary to form her own worldview - separate from the one she was raised to accept. From there, she went on to study at Harvard and Cambridge and earn her PhD.
Educated is a beautifully written memoir that documents how knowledge has the power to transform our identities and our views about the world. Though it was stressful to read at times - particularly the parts about her crazy father and abusive brother - this is a book I would recommend to just about anyone.
