DOUBLE REVIEW: Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow + Acts of Violet

Happy Pub Day!

There are so many incredible books publishing this July, so today I want to highlight two highly anticipated novels that are on sale today. 🤩

Thank you to Alfred A. Knopf and Flatiron Books for sending me early copies of these books. Keep reading for mini reviews of both…

TOMORROW AND TOMORROW AND TOMORROW
On the surface, this may seem like a book about video games, but at its core, it’s a beautiful story about friendship, passion, loss and love. When two old friends - Sam and Sadie - reconnect to build a video game together, their wildly successful creation leads to a thriving gaming business. With much of their friendship tied up in a shared passion, we see Sam and Sadie grow - both as individuals and as partners - through the games they create.

The author’s passion for her subject matter really shines through, as she expertly details the execution of Sam and Sadie’s work. While I did feel like the descriptions of some of the video games were a bit dense (at least for the average / non-gamer reader), there were some beautiful metaphors and plot nuances built into the gaming elements.

The book also includes an intimate look at the realities of living with a disability, as we see Sam struggle with a longtime injury from a tragic car accident.

Overall, this is lovely story with complicated emotions, fascinating characters and plenty of memorable moments.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

TW: gun violence, death of a loved one, ableism, car accident, cancer, medical trauma

ACTS OF VIOLET
The latest from the author of Oona Out of Order, this whimsical story focuses on the search for a famous magician who mysteriously vanished ten years prior during an onstage performance. Told from the perspective of Violet’s sister as well as through emails and an investigative Podcast, the book explores many different theories and strange occurrences following Violet’s disappearance.

While I enjoyed this one, it didn’t quite captivate me like Oona Out of Order. That said, I think this one will be well received by those who love magic and/or stories told through many unique perspectives.

Overall, a solid mystery with a fun hint of the paranormal.
