The Wedding Date was Malala’s February pick for her book club through Literati. Thank you Literati for this gifted copy! For more information on Literati, check out my stories.

While I’m not usually one for fluffy rom-coms, I enjoyed the fact that this story focuses on an interracial couple and explores some of the unique dynamics that accompany relationships between people from different backgrounds.

The story begins with a classic meet-cute. Our two main characters, Alexa and Drew, meet and hit if off while stuck in a San Francisco hotel elevator. Alexa is an ambitious Black woman who works as the Mayor’s Chief of Staff in Berkeley and Drew is a white doctor who works and lives in Los Angeles. Drew is in town for (and dreading) the wedding of his best friend and ex-girlfriend. Since his date backed out at the last minute, Drew spontaneously invites Alexa to accompany him to the wedding. Despite her hesitations, Alexa agrees. What follows is a classic fake relationship to lovers story.

While this is certainly an easy and sweet read, I felt the story could have used a bit more substance. A good portion of the book revolved around eating and hooking up… which is all well and good, but it started to feel a bit repetitive. I would have preferred to hear more about Alexa and Drew’s independent careers as well as their activities together outside of the bedroom.

Nevertheless, if you enjoy tame-yet-steamy rom-coms or just need a good palette cleanser between heavier reads, give this one a try.
