The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
Book Review
Apparently The Nightingale is one of the highest rated books on Goodreads and now I understand why. I finally got around to reading this historical fiction bestseller and I absolutely loved it.
The story follows the heroic and tragic adventures of two brave sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, throughout the course of WWII.
As the Nazis infiltrate and occupy France, we see both sisters struggle with the hardships of war. Vianne and her young daughter are forced to live with a Nazi solder while her husband is away fighting at the front. As food grows scarce and the Nazis begin shipping off her friends and neighbors, Vianne is forced to make one life-threatening decision after another in order to ensure the survival of her family and community. Meanwhile, Isabelle, a rebellious teen, joins the resistance and helps start an underground network to deliver downed airmen to safety. Through this dangerous endeavor, she earns the nickname The Nightingale.
If you haven’t yet read this book, I can’t recommend it enough. Kristen Hannah does a beautiful job of paining a picture of worn-torn Europe and the women who helped fight the war behind the scenes.
