The Maid by Nita Prose

Book Review

What a fun book! If you enjoy thrillers and/or murder mysteries, this one’s for you...

Selected by Good Morning America's Book Club as their January selection, The Maid feels very much like Eleanor Oliphant in an Agatha Christie plot line.

In her debut novel, Nita Prose tells the story of Molly the maid - a quirky protagonist who finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation after the death of an important hotel guest. Raised by her Gran, twenty-five year old Molly adores her job returning hotel rooms to a state of perfection at the prestigious Regency Grand Hotel. While her co-workers may not understand her, she finds a friend in the glamorous Giselle, wife of the famed-businessman Charles Black. However, when Molly enters the Black’s penthouse one afternoon and finds Charles dead in his bed, she struggles to adequately explain her side of the story to the police and her superiors. Thus, she ends up the prime suspect in Mr. Black’s murder and must enlist the help of some new friends to prove her innocence.

While some of Molly's actions felt a bit frustrating, she is certainly a unique character and I really enjoyed seeing her develop from naive, well-mannered and unassuming hotel employee to savvy and empowered leading lady.

If you’re looking for a fast and enjoyable read to pull you out of a reading slump or if you just love a good whodunit murder mystery, I highly recommend you pick this one up!

And exciting news, Universal Pictures is in the process of adapting the book into a feature film starring Florence Pugh
