Shoe Dog by Phil Knight

Book Review

It seems only fitting to start this thing off with one of my favorite books. At the beginning of 2019, I made a new years resolution to read more - Shoe Dog by Phil Knight was the first book I read in pursuit of that goal. Up to that point, the last time I’d lost track of time while reading was when I was a teenager reading the Harry Potter series. This book inspired and educated me, but most importantly, it helped me to rediscover my love of reading. So much so that I went on to read another 45 books before the end of 2019.

The book begins with a 22-year-old Knight wanting to create a better running shoe, so he begins importing shoes from Japan to sell in America. Throughout his story, we see Knight grow from a young and inexperienced founder that’s selling running shoes out of the trunk of his car into a billionaire business mogul leading one of the most successful sports and apparel brands in history. The book makes it clear that Phil Knight and Nike’s path to success was filled with obstacles and set-backs at every turn, but it’s those twists and turns that make this book such a fascinating read.

If you’re interested in memoirs or business books, I highly recommend adding this book to your reading list.
