Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy

Book Review

Who doesn’t love a book about an epic journey??

Much like The New Wilderness, Migrations is a dystopian survival story that takes place in the not-so-distant future when global warming has decimated the earth’s wildlife. Unlike The New Wilderness, this story takes place mostly at sea.

The main character, Franny Stone, is a troubled and mysterious woman who is determined to follow the last of the remaining Arctic terns on their migration from Greenland to Antarctica. After talking her way onto a fishing boat, Franny begins her journey across the ocean along with a fascinating cast of characters. The timeline alternates between Franny’s present and her dark past. As the secrets of Franny’s past begin to unravel, her history and impulsive nature threaten to endanger the entire crew.

While this is a story about climate change, it’s also a story about freedom, love, adventure and hope. Franny is a complicated character (one deeply in need of therapy) who will leave you questioning her every move. Nevertheless, you can’t help but root for her success amidst a world of devastation.

While this is a rather quiet book, it’s full of shocking revelations that will keep you turning pages long past bedtime. The author does a brilliant job of bringing to life a pre-apocalyptic world on the brink of annihilation due to human interference. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to those who enjoy literary fiction and/or dystopian eco-thrillers.
