Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Book Review

daisyjones

This book was exactly what I needed after all the heavy books I’ve been reading. While it does involve some heavy topics like addiction, depression and drug abuse, the author did an excellent job of weaving in humor and lighthearted commentary to uplift the story.⁣

⁣The book follows the rise of a fictional 1970’s rock band, The Six, as well as the ephemeral Daisy Jones, a troubled singer-songwriter who ultimately joins the Six. As the band begins their rise to stardom, we see each of the characters grapple with their newfound success. In addition to diving deep into the struggles of her lead characters - Daisy is addicted to drugs and Billy (the lead singer) is a recovering addict trying to remain faithful to his wife - the author includes all the things that typify rock n’ roll in the 70’s - sex, drugs, parties, love and much more.

⁣The book is written in an interview format from present day, with all the band members and other key characters lending their voices and reflecting back on events. At first I disliked this format, but as I kept reading, I ended up really enjoying it. I found it very entertaining to see how the different characters remembered certain events. I also think this format contributed to lightening the overall mood of the story, as it gave a voice to the supporting characters whose memories of events were oftentimes completely offbeat and hilarious.⁣

⁣I can’t wait to watch the upcoming mini-series adaptation by Amazon Prime and producer Reese Witherspoon! If you’re looking for a fast and entertaining read, I highly recommend this one!⁣
